The Kazini Community Care Initiative Uganda (KCCIU) team
recently held a heartfelt and strategic meeting with
General Salim Saleh to express deep gratitude for his
unwavering efforts in supporting the welfare of the
children of Uganda’s fallen soldiers — the Watoto ya
Jeshi.
During the meeting, KCCIU highlighted the pressing need
to create sustainable livelihoods for these children
through agriculture-based empowerment programs. The team
presented a detailed proposal to integrate Watoto ya
Jeshi into KCCIU’s flagship agricultural training and
production initiatives, particularly the Youth
Sustainable Agricultural Scheme and Maize Outgrower
Projects in Kyankwanzi District.
KCCIU Meets Gen. Salim Saleh to Empower Children of Fallen Soldiers Through Agriculture
Key Highlights from the Meeting:
- Acknowledgment of Gen. Saleh’s Patriotism: KCCIU recognized Gen. Saleh’s outstanding commitment to national service and his advocacy for economic empowerment through production.
- Proposal Presentation: KCCIU shared a plan to train and support Watoto ya Jeshi in sustainable farming, agribusiness management, and access to farm inputs through the SACCO model.
- Collaboration Opportunities: Both parties discussed future collaboration, including land allocation, seed capital support, and logistical coordination to ensure successful onboarding of youth into productive agricultural activities.
“We don’t want to see the children of Uganda’s heroes forgotten. These young people can be the next generation of agricultural leaders if given the right tools,” said one of the KCCIU representatives during the meeting.
Proposed Areas of Support:
- Practical training in crop production (maize, horticulture, coffee)
- Access to land and inputs through KCCIU-supported SACCO loans
- Business incubation and cooperative development
- Support in market linkage, especially for supplying government agencies
Moving Forward
General Salim Saleh commended the initiative and welcomed the idea, emphasizing the importance of value addition, discipline, and production-focused programs as key to youth transformation. He encouraged KCCIU to continue mobilizing and skilling vulnerable youth and pledged to engage relevant stakeholders to support the rollout.
KCCIU is now preparing a formal implementation roadmap, and further consultations are expected in the coming months with the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs (MODVA) and local leaders in Kyankwanzi to operationalize this partnership.

Implementation Roadmap
KCCIU’s implementation roadmap will prioritize inclusive planning, ensuring that the voices of beneficiary families, veteran associations, local authorities, and other community-based actors are fully represented. The goal is to co-create a model that is not only sustainable but also scalable across other regions of Uganda with similar needs.
To support this process, KCCIU will undertake the following:
- Conduct community sensitization campaigns to inform and prepare Watoto ya Jeshi households for the upcoming agricultural programs.
- Identify and register eligible beneficiaries, focusing on orphans, widows, and dependents of fallen soldiers with an interest in farming and agribusiness.
- Roll out initial training modules, including practical field demonstrations, savings culture education, and agribusiness planning.
- Disburse starter packages consisting of quality seeds, basic tools, and access to SACCO credit support.
- Establish monitoring and support teams within Kyankwanzi to track progress, provide mentorship, and document success stories.
Expected Outcomes
By mid-2025, KCCIU envisions the following outcomes:
- At least 300 youth trained and engaged in structured agricultural production
- Establishment of 5 youth-led agricultural cooperatives
- Increase in household incomes through sales to institutional buyers such as NEC
- A strengthened partnership with MODVA, laying the groundwork for expansion to other districts

Through ongoing collaboration with government agencies, development partners, and local communities, KCCIU is committed to building a generation of self-reliant, skilled, and purpose-driven youth who can contribute meaningfully to Uganda’s agricultural transformation.
